I was meant to post updates on my weekend activities, but unfortunately am still stuck in the office having my super late dinner/mid-night snack. Aren’t we in a global recession (or going into one based on IMF’s rule of thumb definition), where’s all the demand coming from anyway. I probably shouldn’t complain too much, being busy is probably better than being redundant. As Rogoff foresees correctly that the financial sector has to shrink significantly, it seems likely that investment banks are going to cut people further. I wouldn’t be surprised if banks give their employees a big “Christmas present.”
Although the possibility of being fired doesn’t trouble me too much, I think it’s a negative for me no matter I get to keep my job or not. Getting fired means losing my income streams, and in this market it might be tough to find a satisfactory job. But surviving in this turmoil doesn’t look like a good deal either. Staying in my job while others are fired means I could fall into earning a minimum wage per hour. For now I probably get a higher utility from having an extra hour of free time (especially if I’ve to work even longer hours), but things could easily changed if I were to be unemployed for long. Research also shows that being unemployed correlates strongly with unhappiness for an average person.
Since it’s not in my power to decide, I guess I should try to get out of here asap so I could spend some time with “my precious”.
Same here man, stuck in the office at this hour…I believe being abused by the employer correlate strongly with unhappiness for an average person as well :(But anyway, as of now,Wrap up the work asap, then go back to enjoy "your previous"
This year is just fermenting dude, we will see the real impact in 2009 and 2010, get a hold on to your job, economic situation is bad and having a high paid job in this economic crisis is the best present of your new year… hahha… Take care dude.
You, no need to worry abt a \’job\’ which only means income streams, because I am 100% sure it is easy for you to find this kind of \’job\’…Thus I said before, if we want everything to go on track as what we expect, we need luck, chance and endeavor. The only thing we can control is endeavor, we can devote a lot to get a result. Then if we want a even much better result, we need a little luck and a good chance as well…Spend more time with your precious and get a good sleep is not a bad idea for your health..in this depressed market..hehe

Perhaps I sound a bit too negative in my post. I\’m still relative happy and enjoy my work, just that there are many other things I\’d like to spend time on as well. I\’m not in a position to decide whether to stay or not and don\’t plan to quit on my own for now. But I might use the New Year as a time to decide whether I\’d like to be doing something else in the future.Phil: Didn\’t know you\’re still reading this blog. We in finance usually get hit hard and early in a recession, just like IT, so I\’m well aware of the severity and potential length of the recession. Perhaps now is a good time to consider doing a PhD. You take care as well, see you soon assuming airport reopen on 15 Dec. as planned and not turning into red from yellow.Angie: Good advice. I probably should spend more time with it or else either my bed, or my back would get displeased. I\’m more or less fully recovered now, will probably go play basketball this weekend as I haven\’t exercised for weeks. There\’s also a Standard Charter marathon this Sunday which I signed up earlier. It might be a bit abusive to my little house elf, but I think I\’d go for it (just for the 10k race, not the full marathon).
